Privacy notice (draft)
Selemo is used by parents and guardians. Children are the people we protect most carefully: they are data subjects, never users. This notice explains what we keep and why, in plain words.
This website
This marketing site sets no cookies, runs no analytics and loads nothing from other companies. Its fonts and images are served from Selemo itself. The servers that host it may keep short technical logs to keep the site secure; these are not used to follow you across the web.
What we keep about a child
- A first or chosen name.
- The birth month and year, never a full date of birth.
- Languages and grade.
- Learning notes you choose to write, and the learning record you build: plans, observations, notes about main lesson book pages, and progress.
- Photos of your child's work, only if you give the separate consent for photos. We never ask for photos of a child's face.
What we keep about you
- Your name and email address, and those of the guardians you invite.
- Your household's rounded location (to about 5 km), used only for seasons, weather and outdoor suggestions.
- Your plan, invoices and payment references. Card details are handled by our payment provider, Paystack, and never reach Selemo.
Why
Only to help you plan, teach, keep evidence and show progress, including for registration with your provincial education department if you choose. We do not sell information, show advertising or build profiles for anyone else.
Consent
Before we store anything about a child, we ask the child's parent or legal guardian for consent, as POPIA requires. Some parts of Selemo have their own, separate consent: photos of your child's work, help from Gogo, and sharing with a mentor or a pod. Each can be withdrawn at any time in Settings.
Who sees it
You and the guardians you invite to your household. Selemo staff do not look at a household's record unless you ask us for help and give time-limited access, and every such access is recorded.
Where it is kept
Your household's information and photos are stored on servers in South Africa.
If you turn on help from Gogo, some text is sent to AI services outside South Africa. Before anything is sent, names are replaced with tokens, places smaller than a province are removed, and dates of birth, locations, contact details and photos are never sent. Those services do not keep the text to train their models.
Your choices
You can see, export or delete everything at any time in Settings. If you withdraw consent for a child, we stop using that child's information straight away, keep it for 30 days in case it was a mistake, and then delete it. A record that consent was given and withdrawn is kept, without the child's name, so that we can show we acted on your choice.
Invoices are kept after a household is deleted, because tax law requires it. They hold no information about children.
