About Selemo

Selemo is made in South Africa for families who teach their children at home and love the rhythm, story and handwork of Waldorf education.

The name

Selemo is a Sesotho and Setswana word tied to the year and its planting season. Waldorf-inspired education lives in rhythm: the day, the week, the season and the year. The name says that without borrowing anyone else's. It is said seh-LEH-mo.

Why it exists

Many South African families teach at home, and many of them hold Waldorf ideals. Almost every curriculum they can buy was written for the northern hemisphere and for another country's rules: the festivals fall in the wrong season, the nature table shows the wrong trees, and nothing helps with registration under the BELA Act.

Selemo is the companion those families asked for: southern seasons, local stories, honest help with compliance, and a firm line that keeps screens away from children.

How the curriculum is made

Blocks, stories, verses and activities are original to Selemo. Traditional material is retold in Selemo's own words with its source tradition named. Every block goes to a trained author and a reviewer, and traditional stories to a cultural reviewer, before families see them. Where Selemo compares its work with CAPS, the comparison is written in its own words and checked against the Department of Basic Education's documents.

Your family's information

A child's record is kept on servers in South Africa, with as little about the child as the work needs: a first name, a birth month and year, never a full date of birth and never a photo of a face. You can export or delete everything at any time.
